Then there is the opposite position to assuming an automatic link between the passage of time and progress. This is the one that says that things have been getting steadily worse as time goes by. Such are those who yearn after the 'Good Life'; like the enthusiasts for organic farming who want a return to the practices of former years as they imagine them; but ignoring the farming of animals for meat or the exploitation of women and children as labourers. Not to mention politically motivated environmentalists who see global warming and the extinction of species as signs that humanity is on the road to extinction if we don't turn away from industrialised economic growth and from the ruthless exhausting of our planet's resources. And, of course, the religious fanatics who claim that the Bible says that the whole human race (except them, of course) is doomed.
